Why not visit Santa Maria della Valle or Badiazza which is a short drive away and will take you along side the River Rizzo. This Benedictine Abbey takes you back to the 12th century and can only be viewed from the outside.
Take a ride along the high road from Messina round Capo Peloro - you will enjoy fabulous scenery and wonderful beaches where you can stop and explore and spend a quiet afternoon.
