Night time is not for the port and ferry area - most people tend to congregate in the centre or attend the Teatro Carlo Felice or Teatro Della Corte where you can watch opera, ballet, musical renditions and generally soak up the drama. There are a number of bars and clubs close by and as long as you stay in the crowd you are fine. Taxi's to and from the hotel are easily arranged.
The city is famous for many things - the once home of Christopher Columbus who grew up here and the maritime port that did much of the dealings with the Phoenician and Greeks. Now an international business centre hosting many conferences, conventions and exhibitions.
