The oldest part of Siracusa is Isle of Ortigia - a most charming place that allows you to meander its narrow streets and where you will find a host of historical buildings - the Via della Maestranze is the road that crosses the Isle and starts from Piazza Archimede and stretches as far as the sea - lined all the way along by amazing palaces. Once down at the sea - what a perfect opportunity to rest a while - top up your tan, soak up the sunshine, splash in the ocean and revive, refresh and relax your mind, body and soul.
Visit the caves of Orecchio di Dioniso - they are deep - going down as far as 65 metres and are famous for their special acoustics. Any sound made inside the caves is amplified by up to 16 times - amazing.
Two castles worth viewing are the Castello Maniace - built by Frederick II of Swabia and dates back to the year 1000. The other is Castello di Eurialo built around 400 BC by Dioinysium the Old to defend the city from the Carthaginians. Fascinating history and wisdom lays here.
