Buried under ash and lapillus for over 1,700 years, the lost and found city of Pompeii is truly unique. Effectively an open-air museum of amazingly well preserved Roman houses, streets and theatres - it's a place your curiosity has to visit. When the nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, darkness descended over this corner of Campania, killing many residents and driving the rest from the area forever. It was re-discovered in 1748 in an excavation effort that is still ongoing, with archaeologists continuing to find fascinating artefacts everywhere. Even if you're well versed with its history, nothing will prepare you for experiencing the city for yourself. You'll see the temples of Venus, Apollo and Jupiter; the Teatro Grande amphitheatre (grass now sprouting in between its benches); and The Villa of Mysteries, with its stunningly kept mosaics; as well baths, forums, gardens, frescoes and everything else you'd expect to see in an ancient Roman city! Something worth bearing in mind is that many visitors who come on day trips leave complaining that they haven't had time to see all of the sights. Our advice? Play it safe and spend more time here, after all, something new is discovered every day in Pompeii.
