A small town just east of the tourist haven of Sorrento, Sant'Agnello is great for trips around the Amalfi Coast or simply for staying put in, on its own beautiful Marinella Beach. Like all settlements on the Sorrentine Peninsula, its origins date from ancient times, and there are many well preserved monuments remaining from various ages. The Church of the Cappuccini Friars and the Cocumella Hotel were both constructed in the 16th century, and even if you're not staying in the latter, its architecture is worth the visit nonetheless! The town and nearby region is made up of a handful of picturesque rhioni (districts) such as the Colli di Fontanelle, the hills of which provide great views of Mount Vesuvius, Ischia and Naples. One of the town's most noted recent attractions is the Sorrento Cooking School. Here you get a one-day crash course in Campanian cooking, where you learn how to make traditional dishes with local produce in a fun and involving environment - great for learning new recipes with which to impress your friends back home. Sticking with food and drink, the town is often used as a starting point for many wine tours of the area, either in the neighbouring hills, or further afield to Avellino.
