filling of Catania. With its ubiquitous Baroque architecture and street
markets, bulging with the fat of the land; there's a bustling atmosphere to
this bright Sicilian city. After being battered by its resident volcano back
in the 17th century, the town was re-built with the combination of black
lava and light-coloured limestone, a look that still characterises it today.
The beautiful blue waters that lap against the port compliment the
cityscape, and its many attractions, perfectly. Amongst these, you'll find
such becoming structures as the Teatro Bellini (Pretty Theatre), the best
place to catch an opera; Ursino's Castle; the Benedictine Monastery, the
second largest in Europe; and the spectacular Piazza Duomo. This Cathedral
Square is worth a special mention, as it contains a cluster of separate
sights on its grounds alone. There's the cathedral itself of course, a
patchwork of architecture due to past occupiers adding a little here and
there; the Palace of the Elephants, which is used as the town hall; the
Amenano fountain; and the city's centrepiece, a lava statue of its symbol,
the elephant. Just in case you're wondering, it's because of a local legend
that tells of pigmy elephants who lived here and protected the city from
fierce creatures! One last thing, Catania Airport is only 5 miles out of
town, making it one of the most easily accessible destinations on the
island!
