Big Tower Torre Grossa in San Gimignano Tuscany Italy

All will be able to see the Big Tower or Torre Grossa, as you approach San Gimignano. This hill top village's main tower can be climbed if you buy a ticket from the office just beneath it.

It is the tallest of the towns surviving medieval sky scrapers. It is quite a climb to get up to the top. It is best to do so just before midday, although the temperature can be hot at this time. That is if you wish to experience the bell striking. Make sure you have your video cameras at the ready.

While you are waiting for bell, you can take in some great views of the town. On a clear day, from here you can see miles of the splendid surrounding countryside. It is located on the Piazza del Duomo, very near the Cathedral. There is an art gallery / museum below the tower which full of medieval frescos.

Construction of The Biggest Tower in San Gimignano

We don't know when it was begun but construction was completed in 1311. It is the tallest of the town's skyscrapers to make it to the modern age intact. It measuring 54 m (177 ft) tall.




Reasons to Visit the Torre Grossa

It is only tower in San Gimignano that can be climbed without prior appointment. Ascending its some two hundred steps leads to a privileged view over the entire town. The characteristic red roofs, narrow streets and breathtaking rolling countryside are a must see from here.
