Legend has it that Siena was founded by Senio and Ascanio, sons of Remus, who fled here on horseback following persecution by their uncle, Romus, the mythological founder of Rome. Although fanciful, this ancient fable, no matter how apocryphal, has permeated Sienese culture ever since. The city's emblem - a she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus - is as evident in Siena as it is in Rome, taking the forms of statues and other artwork across town. Black and white, the supposed colours of the founders' horses, feature prominently on the pre-eminent buildings - most notably on the hilltop Duomo and its eye-catching campanile. Even the townsfolk's equestrian fixation, which reaches its zenith in the two-day Palio delle Contrade, Italy's most famous palio, when the entire city turns out for the horse races around the Piazza del Campo, is sometimes attributed to these Roman renegades. All in all it's safe to say that Siena is a place determined to preserve its heritage. And its medieval walled centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's only accessible by foot, is home to the majority of the sights. These include the aforementioned Duomo; the Santa Maria Della Scala; the Palazzo Pubblico; and Il Campo, often called Italy's most beautiful public square. Leading off from all of the above are myriad narrow cobbled streets, which all eventually lead back to the Campo, and make Siena the archetypal "itinerary optional" Tuscan destination.
