To get full travel cred on your visit to Venice, you have to have a ride on a Gondola. For a low cost you can use a Gondola ferry or Traghetto (plural = Traghetti). If you do, you can still go home and tell you friends you took a Gondola in Venice.
Traghetti make short journeys across the Grand
Canal. They are operated by experienced, qualified Gondoliers
on what are usually older Gondolas. Although the
boats are old, they are
well used and are very river worthy and safe.
Generally they are easy to spot. Look up and down the canal as you walk along it or on a water bus. When you see a Gondola with a number of people on going across, between 2 docks, it is likely to be a Traghetto.
You can get on board and cross the river from the docks. There is a sign for each ferry (see picture left) near to each of the docks they use. There are a number of them along the canal where you can pick one up. As there are a only 3 bridges across the Grand Canal, these ferries are useful.
