Is there only one romantic city in Italy's north east? I think not! Verona, the
setting for Romeo and Juliet, possesses both a beauty and a history as
equally compelling as the famous play. Sitting in the foothills of the
Lessini Mountains, it's characterised by a vista of 35-plus basilica spires
jetting from a sea of russet roofs. The San Zeno Maggiore, with its 72-metre
tall bell tower, stands out for many a reason (as it's also considered one
of the country's architectural masterpieces). The Roman amphitheatre, simply
called the Arena, is the third largest in the world and its 25,000 capacity
is still put to good use, hosting classical concerts and operas. It's not
the only reminder of the Empire's influence on the city either. Both the
1st-century Teatro Romano and the imposing Arco dei Gavi (Gavi Arch) retain
their grandeur, and numerous ruins add to the timeless atmosphere. Shopping
is another popular pastime here, so much so that the daily market in Erbe
Square has become another of the city's symbols. You'll also find a range of
fashionable boutiques in Piazza Bra, a place where every building seems to
have its own individually coloured facade. No trip is complete without a
look at Juliet's House, however. Designated by legend, its interiors can be
explored at a charge, but its iconic balcony is free for all to see, and has
been visited by tourists and couples for hundreds of years. A splendid selection of cheap hotels in Verona for you to book online is available here.
