This is the second largest city in Sicily and stands in the shadow of the great Mount Etna - who clearly over the years has a mind of her own - erupting whenever and without warning. The lava not always reaching the town - 30 km away. Catania has a number of sights that are well worth visiting and exploring.
The Cathedral dates back to the 11th century and houses royal tombs. It displays Baroque art work and architecture. The Roman Amphitheatres are worth viewing - one is similar in style to the Colosseum in Rome. Be sure to view Ursino Castle which is now a the Civico Museum and dates back to the 13th century.
And now for that trip up Mount Etna - you can take the Funicula up the mountain and rejoice at the views as you do and there are guided tours too where you will have the comfort of a 4x4 to travel the tracks. Once at the top enjoy the panoramic views and take those photos.
At days end be sure to find a delightful restaurant - there are plenty to choose from and indulge in the regional delights with the wines to help you relax and unwind.
