The biggest of the Neapolitan islands, Volcanic Ischia has a history of
attracting visitors to it shores. Many come in anticipation of its thermal
springs, which are among the largest in the world; but this is only the
beginning... Rising from the sea, its verdant slopes, chalk-white buildings
and multicoloured orchards all cling to the sides of Monte Epomeo, the
island's central, dormant volcano. Turquoise waters and sandy beaches line
the coast, and some, such as the Cartaromana and Marina dei Maronti are home
to the fumaroles, natural spas and hot springs that make Ischia famous. They
also ensure the seas are a pleasant place in which to swim, even in winter.
The warm waters have been used as curealls since Roman times, and after a
quick dip (or long bathe) on the coast you'll be ready for a trek to one of
the many tourist sights. The Faiano Pine Forest, in the south-westerly
commune of Barano, is a beautiful slice of nature. Interspersed with tall,
perfumed trees and masses of lava rock, it's the perfect place for a walk in
the shade on a hot afternoon. The Castello Aragonese is arguably the
island's most spectacular monument. Completely monopolising the tiny island
of Ischia Ponte (which can be reached via bridge) its long stone steps and
sandy-coloured buildings perched on rocky outcrops make it a must-see. It
can be visited today via a recently installed lift, and is a day out in
itself.
