For a small city of just 17,000 to receive as many pages in travel guides as this one does, it has to offer something special - and Sorrento does not disappoint. Situated on a plain high above the sea, it's renowned for its panoramic vistas, narrow alleyways, quaint houses, fragrant orange blossoms and spectacular historical merit. It's also the starting (or ending) point of the Costiera Amalfitana; regarded as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Europe. As well as the views, the city known as La Gentile is home to many other amazing sights. Top of the list is Il Vallone dei Mulini (The Deep Valley of the Mills). It can be seen from above at Sorrento's historical centre, and with its grassed-over buildings and perilous drops it looks like a lost world. The Basilica of San Antonino; the 11th-century cathedral; and the city's bustling epicentre, Piazza Tasso, all give the city a more familiar feel. If you're English-speaking, then you may find yourself even more at home, with the majority of locals fluent in the language (and also very friendly). As for getting there, either a swift drive down from Naples Airport via the scenic SS145 route, or a train to Circumvesuviana Sorrento Station will see you arrive in this delightful corner of Campania in good time.
