Although often overlooked by holidaymakers in favour of neighbouring Florence and Pisa, the medieval city of Lucca is home to some of Tuscany's most impressive sights. The Duomo di San Martino, Piazza Anfiteatro, San Michele in Foro and the tree-topped Guinigi Tower would all be worthy additions to any destination's list of attractions. Their setting, on an alluvial plateau close to the Serchio river and encircled by rocky mountains, makes them that extra bit special. Lucca's history is sprawling to say the least. Founded by the Etruscans, it became a Roman colony in 180 BC and to this day it still retains the gridded rectangular street plan. Before that Lucca had a spell as Tuscany's capital in the 10th and 11th centuries. The next 500 years saw it partake in countless feudal skirmishes, finally gaining its independence in the 17th century. To prevent against further incursions, Lucca's oligarchy completely surrounded the settlement with defensive walls; these were later pedestrianised and now constitute the city's main attraction. Lucca was also the first Tuscan city to convert to Christianity, in AD 47; a fact that may explain its preponderance of churches - one for every day of the year, they say. Summer sees the annual advent of the Music Festival of Lucca. This five week festival is basically an open-air event dedicated to the city's most famous son, Puccini. The great composer's birthplace, which has been turned into a museum, is also not to be missed; it can be found on Corte San Lorenzo in the heart of town.
